The PRESBYTER'S MEETING

Several Important Facts about the Meeting in Sliven

After a series of crises in the administrative and spiritual leadership of the Stara Zagora CoG Region, the ordained presbyters decided that an official meeting should be convened following the traditional practices of the region, namely that every two years there should be an administrative/ election presbyters’ meeting. It was due in May 2008, but it was dismissed by the then current Bishop Stilian Mihailov. However, seeing the chaos and rising discontent, along with the threat of ruining the unity of the region, the majority of the presbyters expressed their readiness to gather and have a meeting. The date was set for July 5, 2008. The place was El Hanaan CoG, led by Rev. Sasho Vasilev.

The meeting was attended by 40 presbyters (plus 3 who came later and thus were not able to sign their names in the minutes). Two more ministers sent their representatives. The leadership of the Theological College, represented by Petia Zlatarova, and the leadership of Care for All Ministries, represented by its President Dinko Zlatarov, also endorsed this ministers’ election meeting. This is more than 2/3 of all ordained presbyters (Note: The total number of presbyters is 63). After the meeting started and the agenda was followed, the presbyters began the voting procedure and with 100 % of the votes Rev. Stefko Zlatarov was elected as the new Regional Bishop. According to the constitution of the Church of God, Bulgaria, in order for such meeting to be convened and have legitimacy/ quorum, it should have a normal majority (51 % of all presbyters) (See Point 26/3 of the constitution).

The Stara Zagora Regiona has 63 ordained presbyters, who are responsible for 75 local congregations. These 63 presbyters are the voting power of the region. They are from various backgrounds – Bulgarian, Roma, Turkish (but the majority are from the Roma minority). They have the full right and privilege express their opinions, to ask for clarity in the leadership strategy of the Regional Bishop, to ask for total accountability and transparency of the Regional Bishop and the Regional Council, to cast their votes for their leader and to participate in the important activities in the region and the denomination as a whole.

However, sadly in the past few months there have been attempts made to prevent the presbyters from expressing their opinions and vision. There have been attempts at manipulation and open threats and statements that these ministers do not have the right to openly express their opinion and position. But we believe that the time for totalitarian type of leadership is over in Bulgaria on the political scene and should by no means be tolerated in the Church. The ministers of the Stara Zagora Region would not willingly fall in the trap of leadership through fear and manipulation. Each presbyter has a God given voice in this region, a personal dignity and ministerial expertise, which give them the right to stand against any persons, organizations or politicians who might try to take away their dignity and integrity or buy them with money or promises. The ministers in the Stara Zagora Region have realized it through the years that they are free in Christ and no one can take away their hard won freedom (I Corinthians 7:23).
